The whole idea for "New Era" existed for a long time before the actual song (If you can even call it that) came into being. I liked the idea of "Castaway" as the first track of the album, but I found that it was a bit of a sudden start to the album. I wanted it to be more of slow burner in the beginning so that it would be all the more powerful and grand once "Castaway" kicks in.

That's one of the purposes that "New Era" serves in the context of the record. The other one would be that it works as a kind of overture, as two of the album's most important, reoccurring themes are first presented here. If you listen to the early demos of the album, you'll probably notice that what later became "New Era" used to be part of "Castaway".
